“The forth Sheard novel, Slim To None, Moss Must soul-search his relationship to a life-long friend. Timothy Sheard writes engrossing novels. The protagonist, Lenny Moss, is a “simple” metropolitan hospital custodian, but he has an affinity for solving crimes and helping people. Of course he doesn’t solve them on his own as he has many of the large crew of hospital staff willing to pitch in to assist. Did I mention that he is also the union steward who eventually repays any assistance he gets with his intellectual services. The best feature of Sheard’s books are his cast of characters, and many of them are characters, indeed. They are all fascinating. And the plots are clever also. It is to the readers’ benefit to get to know each any every one of these people, so you are encouraged to read the books in order, but it is not necessary to enjoy the books.”

The the author does an excellent job of balancing multiple plot lines and humor against danger and intrigue. You’d be hard pressed to find a more atypical hero than Lenny - he’s neither tall nor particularly good looking. But what he lacks in looks, he more than makes up for in courage, smarts and charisma. I liked him right from the beginning. Add to the mix a cast of fascinating, though far from perfect characters, and you’ve got a winning combination for an enjoyable read by any standard.”

“I rarely read mysteries, but Slim to None grabbed me: it starts with dramatic immediacy, so I couldn’t put it down. I liked its hospital setting (Sheard knows his medical procedure lingo!) and the all-too-real danger of not getting the treatment you need. I’m a union gal, so I liked the union rep main character who’s both committed to and hassled by his fellow workers. The gym owner’s a scary guy, and Lenny trapped in a hospital bed even scarier. Nice themes of who to trust - or not, especially when everyone seems to be withholding crucial information. A good read.”
