The book does such a  wonderful job of showing workers uniting to fight for justice that  several unions have used his books for steward training. Find out if Lenny and his friends win their battles in this roller coaster of a book.

There’s enough suspense, fear and chills running up and down your spine to make you keep on reading it in one fell swoop. Watch your back if you’re alone in the house!

In the fifth Moss novel, No Place To Be Sick, not only is the hospital no place to be sick, but it is no place to be as a serial killer is loose. Timothy Sheard writes engrossing novels. The protagonist, Lenny Moss, is a “simple” metropolitan hospital custodian, but he has an affinity for solving crimes and helping people. Of course he doesn’t solve them on his own as he has many of the large crew of hospital staff willing to pitch in to assist. Did I mention that he is also the union steward who eventually repays any assistance he gets with his intellectual services. The best feature of Sheard’s books are his cast of characters, and many of them are characters, indeed. They are all fascinating. And the plots are clever also. It is to the readers’ benefit to get to know each any every one of these people, so you are encouraged to read the books in order, but it is not necessary to enjoy the books.

Love the true-to-life characters. As a hospital worker for many years, love the idea that the workers can get together and take care of business like they do here.

Another fantastic Lenny Moss thriller by Tim Sheard. A serial killer is on the loose in a Philadelphia hospital. But who is the greater menace to patients and workers: the psychopathic murderer, or the cost-shredding, union-busting capitalist-corporate raider, waiting in the wings to buy and asset-sweat the hospital? Sheard shows that crime comes in different forms. An uncomplicated but highly effective narrative device is used: we see who the killer is, but wonder how he will be stopped. As in previous Lenny Moss books the killer is accompanied by other crooks, including the cowardly hospital and nursing chiefs, and the bullying head of security, and the workers act collectively to challenge the threat to their workplace and community.
— Jim Phillips, Scottish Labour History Society
In chapter 5, we read about Mr. Delgado who needs dialysis. He is the “...patient with the massive stroke and the bilateral leg amputations...” While putting in the catheter, a dr. snaps at another dr. to hold the patient’s leg, which he does by “Grasping the leg at the knee and ankle...” Where did he find the patient’s ankle if the patient had bilateral leg amputations? I would think by this time, proofreading & editing would be better than this. I’ll keep going, with the hope that this was just a small stumble in the writing process and, the rest will be smooth as silk.

...Riveting through and through. Couldn’t put the book down. Freak ending. Loved the baby brought mom around.

I just picked this book up yesterday and couldn’t put it down! This is my first Lenny Moss novel and I’m ready for the next one. I’m fan of detective stories, enjoying the surprises and twists and Sheard thoughtfully weaves in issues of economic inequality, underlining the working classes’ place as the backbone of society, while constantly having to battle against corporations putting the bottom line over people lives, and did so in absorbing adventure. Lenny Moss is the shrewd steward fighting against the injustices of management and society while using those same skills to stop an arrogant, killer doctor. The workers have to band together to help stop the killer doc before he can strike again, and doing so while being threatened by management. It’s fun, well paced, and I’m looking forward to more Lenny Moss!

I love the Lenny Moss Mystery series. Tim Sheard writes movingly about the dignity of work and he writes realistically about the owners, managers, professional and support staffs, both the good and the bad. He is one of the few fiction authors who writes about the day to day work of union members and shop stewards. No Place to Be Sick is a great easy read if you like mystery stories, but it is also a book to generate discussion in classes about labor, sociology, or economics at the high school and college level, as well as general labor education classes. This book will also give a new perspective for the next time you have to go to the hospital.

I’m a reader of this Lenny Moss series and have followed the hospital shenanigans of both good and evil employees. Every workplace has its heroes and villains, but a hospital? I thought that everyone in hospitals were caring and that all the employees truly loved working together. Maybe I’m thinking of a hospital in a non-existent land far, far away. Tim’s writing shows us that hospital’s are filled with real human employees who each has stories to tell and personal lives to lead. And adventure? Should hospitals be a place for adventure? Where else are so many people working so closely with life and death? Hospitals are a set-up for adventure and Tim takes full advantage of this. So...how will I approach my next hospitalization? Carefully...and I’ll be nice to everyone from the doctor to the janitor!

Interesting twist in a Lenny Moss mystery: Lenny doesn’t have to do everything himself, as co-workers play a more important role in finding and identifying a serial killer INSIDE James Madison Hospital. (People die everyday in hospitals—where better would a few “extra” not be noticed...?) This one grabs from the beginning, and doesn’t let go! I’m NOT a novel reader—this is only the second I’ve read in the past 15 years (the other was Lenny’s “Slim to None”)—but I read the entire book in one day! Highly recommended on a number of levels: well-written by a very knowledgeable writer, well-developed characters, interesting plot with reasonable twists and turns, and one who treats his people with respect! Puts the reader right in the action!

Dr. Roy Whyte, a new resident at James Madison Hospital, is dedicated to implement the skills he has learned in the art of practicing medicine. He has a keen mind to detect afflictions that bedevil human beings. He even prays that “god will give him the strength to continue his work and heal his patients to relieve their suffering.” However, under the radiant smile and charming words lies a hidden secret in the mind of Dr. Whyte. That secret is revealed as he demonstrates his skills to resolve the afflictions of tiresome patients. A Code 99 alarm seems to ring whenever one of Dr. Whyte’s patients receives his special treatment. Who will be next? Calling Lenny Moss!

Tim Sheard is a fine writer with an authentic Brooklyn voice. His new novel ‘NO PLACE TO BE SICK’, about a decent guy in a bad spot, has real characters, real tension, and the sort of real choices we are all sometimes forced to make between self-preservation and standing up for what we believe in. One word of caution: if you are scheduled to spend time in a hospital any time soon, don’t read this until after they’ve let you out.
