“Timothy Sheard provides a delightful hospital investigative tale that grips readers from the moment that Dr. Singh and his team apply CPR, but fail.”
“Timothy Sheard takes his crime into the not so antiseptic wards and ICUs of a hospital where a surgeon can be a medical maniac and a maintenance man can be the investigator/hero.”
“His mystery series is deeply infused with his respect for the working man and the labor movement.”
“Sheard has created an intriguing crime novel with a likable, hard- working and unusual detective who challenges authority figures, stands up for the little guy.”
“Timothy Sheard writes engrossing novels. The protagonist, Lenny Moss, is a “simple” metropolitan hospital custodian, but he has an affinity for solving crimes and helping people. Of course he doesn’t solve them on his own as he has many of the large crew of hospital staff willing to pitch in to assist. Did I mention that he is also the union steward who eventually repays any assistance he gets with his intellectual services. The best feature of Sheard’s books are his cast of characters, and many of them are characters, indeed. They are all fascinating. And the plots are clever also. It is to the readers’ benefit to get to know each any every one of these people, so you are encouraged to read the books in order, but it is not necessary to enjoy the books.”
“This book was my introduction to Lenny Moss and the dysfunctional James Madison University Hospital. I was hooked right from the start, and have since read every one of the Moss adventures. You’d be hard pressed to find a more atypical hero than Lenny - a custodian and union representative at the hospital, he’s neither tall nor particularly good looking. But what he lacks in looks and status, he more than makes up for in courage, smarts and charisma. I liked him right from the beginning. Add to the mix a cast of charming, though far from perfect characters, well written mystery plot, and you’ve got a winning combination for an enjoyable read by any standard. In A Race Against Death, Lenny and the crew at James Madison have their hands full dealing with a brutal heat wave, questionable ethics on the part of the hospital administration, and their investigation into the needless death of a young woman, which turns into something far more sinister than anyone could have ever imagined.”
“Lenny Moss is a real, live working class hero. He’s a union rep, who looks out for the workers in a Philadelphia hospital as if they were literally his brothers and sisters. His sense of solidarity is contagious, and he has all the hospital workers looking out for each other as well. What’s amazing is that his characters are so real, they’re like people you know. Struggling against a loaded, unfair system, they manage to prevail by sticking together. Oh, and did I mention there’s a murder mystery in the plot, involving hospital professionals? And Lenny and the hospital workers all work together to bring the perp to justice. Honestly, I don’t usually get into murder mysteries. And the usual hospital dramas don’t interest me much, as a rule. But these Lenny Moss mysteries are outstanding. I think Timothy Sheard is an unrecognized genius. He reminds me of Dashiell Hammett, with a working-class twist. Try as I might, I can’t find anything to criticize about this book. I simply loved it!”
